Long hair has long since been lauded as a woman's beauty, her crown. It's no secret that many of us strive for longer, luscious locks. If you're thinking of growing your hair to long lengths, there are a few tried and true tips to help you achieve your desired length.

1. Maintain a healthy diet.

This part is very important and often overlooked when it comes to growing your hair. Your body needs to be healthy in order to produce the necessary nutrients your hair needs. Lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein should be consumed on a daily basis. Use foods rich in vitamin A, B, Omega 3-fatty acids, Zinc and Iron.

2. Limit manipulation

Over manipulating your hair can cause breakage thus stalling hair growth (retention).
Limit manipulation by wearing your hair in styles that do not require daily combing/brushing. Buns, braids, weaves and wigs can all help you to manipulate your hair a lot less.

3. Moisturize

Moisture! Moisture! Moisture!
Hair needs the right balance of moisture to keep it supple and elastic. Elasticity is important in retaining length because it helps the hair to stretch during styling instead of snapping and breaking off. Develop a simple routine to retain moisture to your hair.

  1. Proteins are key to hair retaining moisture. Look for products that contain moisturizing proteins like Silk Amino Acids/Silk Proteins/Silk Peptides, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein and Soy Protein.

  2. A weekly deep conditioning treatment can work miracles on your hair. Make sure your hair has the right amount of protein and moisture balance.

  3. Moisturize your hair as needed. Everyone's hair is different so focus on what your hair needs. Some may only need to moisturize their hair once a week while others will need to do it daily.

4. Use the right tools

The right tools are important in styling to help minimize breakage. Use a wide tooth comb while detangling. Use covered ponytail holders to eliminate snagging.

5. Limit heat

Heat styling tools should be used on a limited basis as it can dry out your strands and cause severe breakage. If you must use a blow dryer, use your blow-dryer's lowest setting. Move it around so that the hair circulates. Never concentrate the heat on one spot. Flat irons can be used on a low setting if you part your hair in very small sections.

6. Scalp massages

Scalp massages help to stimulate the scalp, increasing blood flow to the hair follicles. This helps to bring nutrients to the hair, assisting in healthy hair growth. Just 5 minutes a day of gently massaging your scalp in a circular motion is sufficient.

If you implement these 6 simple practices, your hair will thank you by growing.
